
South Park girls' basketball coach Reggie Wells watched West Mifflin -- the team ranked No. 1 in WPIAL Class AAA -- come into his team's house and jump out to a 7-0 lead.
"[West Mifflin] always comes out intense, and we weren't matching their intensity," Wells said.
Wells called a timeout in response. Whatever he said must have worked because the Eagles (11-3, 4-1) went on a 36-12 run the rest of the first half and cruised to a 64-51 win last night.
Laurel Lindsay had 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists to lead South Park. Monica Poupakis led the Titans (9-4, 4-1) with 11 points.
"This was huge for us," Wells said. "It was an all-around effort. We did a real nice job defensively."
Destiny Brown had 19 points and Kate Kromka 14 to lead Gateway (7-5, 4-2) to a 50-45 overtime victory against visiting McKeesport (8-6, 3-3) in Class AAAA Section 2. Ryah Gadson had 19 points for the Tigers, who scored onlytwo points in overtime.
Jade Stewart's 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play lifted Class A No. 4 Serra (8-3, 4-0) to a 41-39 win at Fort Cherry (10-3, 2-2) in Section 2 play. Marissa Miles had 17 points for the Rangers. Lauren Bartko had 14 points to lead the Eagles, who have won seven of eight.
In a game with first place in Class AA Section 5 on the line, Jocelyn Floyd had 26 points to lead Washington (9-4, 6-0) to a 55-47 win at Charleroi (8-5, 4-2).
Kaylynn Waters had 11 of her 18 points in the first quarter in leading host New Castle (11-1, 3-1) to a 61-54 win against Class AAA Section 2 rival Hopewell (9-3, 2-2). Elise Farris had 26 points for the No. 2 Vikings. New Castle is ranked No. 3.
Lauren Savulchak had 20 points to lead Class A No. 3 North Catholic (8-4, 5-0) to a 66-46 home win against No. 1 Vincentian (10-4, 5-1) in Section 4 play. Lindsay Primyon had 19 points for the Royals, who trailed, 22-7, after one quarter.
Allison Saccani had 20 points and 23 rebounds to lead host Yough (7-6, 2-2) to a 47-41 win against McGuffey (4-9, 0-4) in Class AAA Section 5.
Union (4-9, 3-3) entered last night's Class A Section 1 game at Rochester averaging 43.6 points per game. The Scotties' Bridget Partridge bested that by herself with 44 points in a 77-65 loss to the Vikings (10-4, 5-1), who got 28 points from Sam Robson.
Jordyn Demniak of Albert Gallatin and Sarah Throckman of South Fayette had six 3-pointers each in leading their respective teams to victories. Demniak had 24 points for the host Colonials (4-10, 1-5) in a 63-54 win against Connellsville (4-11, 0-6) in Class AAAA Section 1. Throckman's 19 points led the Lions (9-3, 4-2) to a 72-28 Class AA Section 3 win at Carlynton (3-10, 1-5).
