Monday, January 12, 2009

A man is being sought in an attempted robbery of a Lawrenceville bank this afternoon.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. at Allegheny Valley Bank in the 5100 block of Butler Street.

Investigators learned the suspect entered the bank and inquired about opening a bank account. After the bank teller requested identification, the suspect told the teller, "This is a bank robbery. You have two minutes to clean out the vault. I am not kidding. I have a gun," according to a police press release.

The teller did not see a gun. She went into the vault as the suspect stood inside the front door of the bank.

A few minutes later the teller returned to her cage with no money in hand. The suspect was no longer standing at the entrance but the teller was uncertain whether he was still in the bank.

Police checked the bank and then found a witness who said she saw a person fitting the suspect's description walking on Butler Street.

The robber is described as white, about 6 feet tall and 140 pounds. He was unshaven and had graying auburn hair. He was wearing a long, greenish trench coat.

Anyone with information is asked to call the robbery squad at 412- 323-7151.
