NFL Notebook: Whatever became of SB XLII hero David Tyree?
Sunday, January 11, 2009

As the New York Giants take the field in the postseason for the first time since upsetting the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, fans might be wondering whatever happened to one of the heroes of that game -- David Tyree.

It has been a strange 12 months for Tyree, whose helmet-top catch was the highlight of the game. He has since been stuck watching after being out all season with knee and hamstring injuries.

Still, with that one huge catch, he became a celebrity -- a talk-show star, an author and a temporary A-list interviewee. To make his life even crazier, his wife, Leilah, gave birth to twins less than three weeks after the Super Bowl at the height of his new-found celebrity.

"She's trying to take care of the kids and I'm telling her, 'Sorry, I've got to fly to L.A. for an appearance," laughs Tyree.

Still another chance?

Adam Jones suggested last night his days with the Dallas Cowboys may not be over. In an interview on CBS' NFL pregame show, the oft-troubled cornerback said that not only does he expect to play football next season, "I think I might be back in Dallas."

Host James Brown then asked: "And you have an inkling that Jerry Jones will give you another shot?"

Jones grinned and said, "Yeah, I do."

From the desk of ...

Wonderful line from Ron Green Jr. of the Charlotte Observer this week in describing the receiving trio of Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston that Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner has to work with:

"They're not just thunder and lightning," Green wrote. "They may be the perfect storm."

Fitzgerald, Boldin and Breaston -- a Woodland Hills graduate -- became the fifth trio in NFL history to have 1,000 receiving yards apiece.

Forgiven, not forgotten

All may seem well with Donovan McNabb and the Eagles these days. But rest assured that he has not forgotten the benching that some are saying has been responsible for Philadelphia's -- and his -- late-season success.

In the final question of one media briefing this week, McNabb was asked about the Giants' defensive struggles and whether he thought it was an issue of personnel rather than scheme.

"I don't think it's personnel," he said, getting up to leave. And then the zinger: "None of them got benched."

Hall of a season

Believe it or not, a 2008 Detroit Lions player is bound for the Hall of Fame. His uniform is, anyway -- the one Jason Hanson wore setting the NFL career record for 50-yard field goals. Hanson kicked a 51-yard field goal Dec. 15 in the first quarter of the Lions' 31-21 loss to Indianapolis. It was his 41st career field goal of 50 yards or longer -- one more than the previous record held by Morten Andersen.

Why Mangini?

Want a glimpse into why the Cleveland Browns hired Eric Mangini as head coach just a short time after he was fired by the New York Jets? Nine of the past 11 Super Bowls have been won by coaches in their second NFL head coaching jobs. The Browns haven't hired a head coach with previous NFL head coaching experience since Nick Skorich in 1971.
