You've heard of Bobby Knight. But Don Meyer? Meyer, coach at Northern State in Fayette, Iowa, becomes only the second coach in men's NCAA history to win 900 games in a 63-58 victory vs. Upper Iowa.
Oregon State's 62-58 overtime victory vs. Southern California elicits a call from the coach's brother-in-law. Some might know him as the First Fan-elect Barack Obama. "I figured this would be the one time he didn't call, but sure enough," Robinson says. "My family always calls, but he calls on the bigger games, so I guess this was pretty big." Indeed. It is the Beavers' first Pac-10 victory since Feb. 22, 2007.
What kind of night is it in Abilene, Texas? The Abilene Christian and Texas Woman's women combine for 112 points and that was just in overtime. For the night, NCAA Division II Abilene Christian scores a 147-143 victory in four OTs. Jamie Meyer scores 49 points for the winners, but is not high scorer. Renee Renz of Texas Woman goes off for 63.
After watching his son's Georgetown team get outrebounded by Pitt, 46-21, former Hoyas coach John Thompson goes on his daily radio show and says the Hoyas are in need of some "thugs." Not criminals or classroom bullies. But guys who can go get some rebounds. Of course that's what he means.
And then there are three, as in unbeatens. Bradley hands Illinois State a 56-52 loss, the Redbirds first after 14 victories. Only Pitt, Wake Forest and Clemson are left with zeroes in the loss column.
Normal warnings prove insufficient. Barely 72 hours after upsetting No. 1 North Carolina, Boston College suffers the proverbial letdown and loses to Harvard, 82-70. Says Eagles coach Al Skinner: "I tried to pre-warn them." Apparently, his players didn't fathom his syntax, either.
No. 20 Arizona State (13-2) shoots 51 percent from the field for the season. But that number pales in comparison to what the Sun Devils do in the second half of a 69-38 romp vs. Oregon State. They make 16 of 18 shots (88.9 percent). "We were trying to figure out back there in the room who missed," says James Harden, who was 10 for 11 in a 22-point night. Here's guessing the First Fan did not call after this one.
Our weekly New Jersey Institute of Technology update: The streak hits 49. Columbia hands NJIT a 73-50 beatdown, the Highlanders' 49th consecutive loss. They figure to reach the magic 50 mark Wednesday at Loyola of Maryland.
Economic times are tough. But if you see a coach not wearing any shoes on the bench, it's not because he can't afford them. Inspired by IUPUI's Ron Hunter, who raised more than 140,000 pairs of shoes for the Samaritan's Feet project last year, other coaches will join him in games surrounding the Martin Luther King holiday Jan. 20. Among those who will bare their toes: Butler's Brad Stevens, South Dakota State's Scott Nagy, University of Missouri-Kansas City's Matt Brown, Indiana State's Kevin McKenna and Detroit Mercy's Ray McCallum.
