BIG 33: Only 5 WPIAL players selected for June all-star game
Sunday, January 11, 2009

The Pennsylvania team in June's Big 33 all-star football game will be unlike any other in the history of the game. It will have only five WPIAL players.

The Big 33 announced the Pennsylvania team yesterday and the only WPIAL players selected were Penn Hills linebacker Dan Mason, McKeesport defensive lineman Dana Brown, Thomas Jefferson tight end Brock DeCicco, Bethel Park running back Lyle Marsh and Bethel Park receiver John Schademan.

The game started in 1958 and never before have so few been chosen from the WPIAL or City League. The previous low was seven in 2000. At least a dozen WPIAL players were picked the past four seasons, with 17 selected in 2007. A panel of coaches met Friday and yesterday to select the team. The game matches Pennsylvania against Ohio in June 20 in Hershey, Pa.

It should be pointed out that Gateway's Dorian Bell and Corey Brown likely would have been selected, but they have already played in two all-star games and are ineligible to play in a third under NCAA rules.
