The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be observed with an annual Day of Service beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Vulcan Theatre on the California University of Pennsylvania campus.
The guest speaker will be Kathryn Cunningham, 86, a retired hairdresser from Monessen who was present for Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps on the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.
Also speaking will be Derrick Reed, Education and Youth Development program manager for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh where he teaches in the Post Secondary Prep Program.
Afterwards, student organizations will perform volunteer work on campus and at sites such as California United Methodist and Presbyterian churches, the California borough building and The Center in the Woods.
Inspiration for the community service dates back to a Jan. 28, 2003, visit by Coretta Scott King, wife of Dr. King, who asked that the day be set aside to commemorate her late husband be "a day on, rather than a day off."
The program is sponsored by the Office of Student Development and Services, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Black Student Union, Student Government, and Frederick Douglass Institute.
