Personal care home evacuated
Saturday, January 10, 2009

A personal care home in Brownsville, Fayette County was evacuated late this afternoon after firefighters were summoned to reports of smoke in the basement.

Firefighters and ambulance companies from Brownsville and other nearby communities were carrying or helping about 14 residents leave the Brownsville Personal Care Home after a smoke alarm rang in the building around 5:30 p.m., authorities said. Some residents sought shelter with other residents of the community while firefighters investigated the source of the smoke, neighbors said.

One person was taken to a hospital, neighbors said. Authorities later said they found no fire in the building and believe the smoke came from someone burning nearby.
