The Dribbler: Mt. Lebanon stands tall
Friday, January 09, 2009

The Dribbler is a loner, but he's proud of it.

During football season, a number of newspapers and other media outlets use someone to pick high school football games. But all the prognosticators disappear in basketball season.

It's pretty much The Dribbler and no one else.

The Dribbler is proud to promote high school basketball and would like to give John Fedko and the boys at WPXI Channel 11 a pat on the back. That is the only local TV station that shows regular-season basketball highlights on a regular basis Friday nights.

As for The Dribbler, the highlight of the past couple weeks was the New Year's Eve party at the home of his cousin, The Fumbler. WPIAL Executive Director Tim O'Malley showed up, but left early because he had tickets for a boxing match between soccer players at the Convention Center.

The Dribbler put up a good fight with his predictions last week, going 7-2. His season overall record is 14-7.

Top boys' games

Mt. Lebanon at Peters Township, tonight -- The Dribbler believes Peters Township coach Gary Goga should open a fitness gym and conduct a yoga class. It would be Goga Yoga. You can stop laughing now. Back to basketball. Mt. Lebanon is the most underrated team in WPIAL Class AAAA. Winner: Mt. Lebanon.

Highlands at Hampton, Tuesday -- Trying to figure out a WPIAL Class AAA top five every week is torture because of the balance and number of pretty good teams. After No. 1 Chartiers Valley, there is a lump of about 7-8 teams. The winner of this game will certainly be in the top five. Winner: Hampton.

Jeannette at Greensburg Central Catholic, Tuesday -- This is a heated rivalry. Now that senior guard Jordan Hall has rejoined Jeannette's team, the Jayhawks should win another section title. Winner: Jeannette.

Beaver Falls at Aliquippa, Tuesday -- Maybe this Aliquippa team is a little down, compared to some other recent Quip teams. But it's not like the Quips are bad. And it's still Beaver Falls vs. Aliquippa, which is worth the price of admission in any year. Winner: Beaver Falls.

Other top boys' games

Tonight -- Perry over Brashear; McKeesport over Penn Hills; North Allegheny over Seneca Valley; Greensburg Salem over Laurel Highlands; South Fayette over Fort Cherry; Carmichaels over Bentworth; Monessen over Charleroi. Char Valley over Moon.

Tuesday -- Mt. Lebanon over Upper St. Clair; Blackhawk over Ambridge; North Catholic over Fort Cherry; Washington over Charleroi.

Top girls' games

Hopewell at New Castle, Monday -- This could very easily be the best game of the week. Both are ranked in the top five in Class AAA. Hopewell allows fewer than 40 points a game, but slowing down New Castle might be a different story. Winner: New Castle.

West Mifflin at South Park, Monday -- Is there a better WPIAL athlete than South Park's Nikki Doria? She's a soccer star, standout basketball player and also a pretty good softball player. But The Dribbler believes West Mifflin has too many good "basketball" athletes. Winner: West Mifflin.

Other top girls' games

Monday -- Mt. Lebanon over Upper St. Clair; Laurel Highlands over Uniontown; Apollo-Ridge over Burrell; Washington over Charleroi; Vincentian over North Catholic; Serra over Fort Cherry.

Thursday -- Fox Chapel over McKeesport; Our Lady of the Sacred Heart over Seton-LaSalle; Jeannette over Shady Side Academy; Monessen over Geibel; Westinghouse over Perry.
