The Browns will hire Eric Mangini as their next head coach, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.
Mangini, 37, fired last week by the Jets, will be introduced today at the team's headquarters in Berea, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Mangini agreed to a four-year deal, but it has not been finalized. Mangini reached an agreement with the club yesterday.
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson confirmed that he has a torn tendon in his groin and listed himself as doubtful for Sunday's road playoff game against the Steelers. Tomlinson was hurt in a 52-21 rout against Denver in the regular-season finale Dec. 28 that clinched the AFC West title.
Troubled cornerback Adam Jones must look elsewhere in the NFL for another chance. The Cowboys are done with him. The former West Virginia star was released after a turbulent season in which he was suspended six games for an off-field scuffle and made little impact on the field.
Jack Kemp, the former housing secretary, congressman and Buffalo quarterback, has been diagnosed with cancer. A statement issued in Washington said Kemp was having tests to assess the origin of the disease and the treatment. He ran unsuccessfully for president in 1988, then later was President George H.W. Bush's housing secretary and ran for vice president as Bob Dole's running mate.
