Robbers who fled to river face multiple charges
Thursday, January 08, 2009

The two men who took a dip in the Allegheny River after snatching an elderly woman's purse were out of the hospital and in jail yesterday.

Shane Harty, 22, of Sharpsburg, and Chad Berry, 20, of Fineview, were arraigned early yesterday on charges of robbery, aggravated assault, theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy. More charges are likely, said Shaler police Detective Rick Byers, from Monday's police chase that caused the robbers to jump into the Allegheny River near the 31st Street Bridge.

They were treated for hypothermia at Allegheny General Hospital before being taken to Allegheny County Jail.

Detective Byers said Mr. Berry grabbed a purse from a 77-year-old woman in the parking lot of the Shop 'n Save on Babcock Boulevard in Shaler. He hopped into a car that Mr. Harty was driving, but the woman held onto the purse and was dragged by the car for a short period of time, Detective Byers said, as the door remained open.

The woman was treated for leg injuries and released from Allegheny General Hospital, Detective Byers said.
