Nova Chemicals will cut 400 jobs worldwide, including an undisclosed number at its facilities in the Pittsburgh region, as part of an effort to reduce costs by $100 million this year.
Nova, which produces chemicals and plastics, is incorporated in Calgary, Canada, maintains executive operations in Moon and has a plant in Beaver County.
Nova executives announced the reductions, which total about 15 percent of its global work force, in a conference call today with securities analysts.
Spokesman Greg Wilkinson said Nova is still identifying where cuts will be made so it is too early to determine how many workers in Moon and at the Beaver County plant will lose will lose their jobs.
Nova last month warned that fourth-quarter sales could decline by as much as 25 percent because of factors related to the weak economy. The company will disclose its fourth-quarter and 2008 financial results later this month.
