Fire destroys Elizabeth Township business
Wednesday, January 07, 2009

A fire that broke out around 7:30 last night destroyed an Elizabeth Township business that produced granite and marble products for more than 60 years.

Several fire companies fought the blaze at Howell Craft Inc., in the 500 block of Simpson Howell Road. A lack of water pressure hampered efforts to control the flames, which caused more than $1 million damage.

Water tankers from two neighboring communities were called in to help. At least 20 fire companies responded to the fire.

It took firefighters about two hours to bring the blaze under control.

The business made kitchen countertops, fireplaces, monuments and other stone products.

The building's walls and ceiling collapsed in the fire. No injuries were reported and there is no word on the cause of the fire.
