Homewood school closed after vandals strike second time
Tuesday, January 06, 2009

Vandals broke into the Holy Rosary School in Homewood last night, smashing windows on at least a dozen interior doors and stealing laptops and other electronics.

It was the second break-in at the Kelly Street school since Christmas, said Rita Canton, the school's principal.

She said it was unclear how the vandals got inside the building. The school, with 150 students, is closed at least until tomorrow.

"There's quite a bit of cleanup we have to do," Ms. Canton said.

The glass panel on her door was also smashed, and the vandals also took money from a pop machine.

Police are investigating.

On Christmas Day, someone broke into the building and damaged the administrative offices. They also stole at least $1,000.

Ms. Canton said it appeared that the first set of burglars broke in through a back door, which has since been fixed.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
