Q: I don't predict the No. 1 ranking to last long with such a tough conference schedule, but do you think that this could attract some recruits? They might start to realize that this is a championship quality team if they are missing something?

Dustin, New Bethlehem, Pa.

FITTIPALDO: Well, Dustin, the ranking should last at least two weeks, which is more than other teams can boast that are in this position. The only way Pitt can be No. 1 for less than one week is if the Panthers lost at home to St. John's on Sunday. And who knows? After that the schedule is not all that menacing for a while. South Florida follows and then a trip to Louisville, but I wouldn't be surprised if Pitt kept the top spot for a while.

But your point is well taken about the conference schedule. No one, except for maybe Sam Young, believes this team has a legitimate shot at being undefeated. As far as attracting recruits go, I don't think a No. 1 ranking in January will do much to change the minds of top-flight recruits. They're more worried about winning national championships and getting in position to be a first-round NBA draft pick.
