The Pitt basketball team has ascended to the top of the national polls for the first time in school history today.

The Panthers are the new No. 1 team in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today coaches' polls that was released this afternoon.

Pitt received 70 of a possible 72 first-place votes in the AP poll and 30 of a possible 31 first-place votes in the coaches' poll. Previous No. 1 North Carolina, which lost to an unranked Boston College team at home last night, received the other first-place votes.

Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Connecticut round out the top five in both polls. The new polls also brought good news for the Big East. A record nine teams from the conference are ranked in both polls. The previous record of eight had been set in early December.

Pitt, one of four remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division I, jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 thanks to North Carolina being upset and previous No. 2 Connecticut losing at home to Georgetown last week.

Pitt remained unbeaten by winning at Georgetown Saturday afternoon. The Panthers will play their first game as the No. 1 team on Sunday afternoon when they play host to St. John's in the Big East home opener at the Petersen Events Center.
