CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

Jan. 7 Cross-country Ski Workshop. REI-SouthSide Works. Venture Outdoors cross-country ski trip leaders present a free introductory workshop on cross-country skiing. 6:30-7:30 p.m. 412-488-9410.

Jan. 10 Cook Forest State Park. Meets 10:30 a.m. at Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom for moderately flat, 4-mile interpretive cross-country trip to Indian Springs. 'Children of Winter': Jan. 10

Get out to Carnegie Library of Homestead to watch other people, well, getting out. Venture Outdoors presents three screenings of Warren Miller's "Children of Winter," a film about extreme skiing adventures. The 1:30 p.m. screening ($6, free for Big Brothers Big Sisters members) includes a talk-back session with extreme skiier Chris Anthony. The 4:30 p.m. dinner screening costs $55, but you get dinner, beer tasting and talk-back with Chris Anthony. The 8 p.m. screening costs $10 and includes a bonus screening of another movie -- "Behind the Film: The Making of 'Children of Winter.'" 412-255-0564.

Jan. 17 Laurel Mountain. Easy, intermediate ski just south of U.S. Rt. 30. Scenic trails, warming hut. Meets 10 a.m. at McDonalds on Rt. 30 in Latrobe, or $8.50 carpool 57 miles from Monroeville. Sierra Club, 724-459-3012.

Jan. 23 Winter Mountain Adventure. Jennings Environmental Eductation Center, Slippery Rock. Two-night winter outdoors activity sampler includes cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, sledding, winter ecology, Civilian Conservation Corps discussion, horse-drawn sleigh ride at locations in Laurel Hill, Laurel Ridge and Ohiopyle State Parks. Jan. 23 Winter Tree ID Workshop. McKeever Environmental Learning Center. Teachers and outdoors leaders invited to free workshop.
