Fire guts two North Side businesses, damages a third
Thursday, January 01, 2009

An early-morning fire gutted two businesses on Pittsburgh's North Side and damaged another.

The most serious damage occurred at K.S.Kennedy, Distinctive Floral Gift and Gourmet, a two-story building at 860 Western Ave., and the one-story Modern Cafe at 862 Western, where it intersects with Galveston Avenue. An adjacent two-story building housing Styles by Thomas and Thomas at 858 Western received water and smoke damage, as did two second-floor apartments.

Firefighters, who were still on the scene at this morning, said the blaze began about 2:30 a.m. in the floral shop. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause and have called in the Allegheny County arson dogs to help.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
