Nico Megaludis, Shane Young, and Dane Johnson entered the Powerade Christmas Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School with hopes to repeat as an individual champion. All three were successful.
Megaludis, a sophomore from Franklin Regional, claimed his second title with a 3-1 overtime win against Zach Zimmer of California's Clovis West in the 112-pound division. Megaludis scored the winning takedown with 23 seconds left in the first overtime.
"My goal is to win four Powerade titles," said Megaludis, who claimed his first title last year at 103. "I didn't wrestle as well as I wanted to, but I wrestled well enough to win."
Young, a senior from Penn-Trafford, captured his third consecutive title with a 6-3 win against Blue Mountain's Tyler Rauenzahn at 119 pounds. However, Young's most significant win came in the semifinals.
His 4-2 win against Bellefonte's Mitchell Port avenged a 6-2 loss in the King of the Mountain Tournament finals 10 days ago.
"I went back and looked at the tape and saw what I did wrong," said Young, referring to the loss to Port, which ended a 100-match win streak that dated to his sophomore season. "The loss helped me prepare for this tournament."
Johnson, a senior from Shady Side Academy, claimed his second title with a 6-4 win in the 140-pound final against Hempfield's Jack Bachman.
"I'm real excited. Winning another Powerade title was one of my goals," said Johnson, who is also a three-time WPIAL and two-time PIAA champion. "Quality tournaments like this really help prepare me for the postseason tournaments."
Johnson was one of four Shady Side Academy wrestlers who advanced to the finals. The others were Frank Martellotti, Matthew Cunningham, and Roman SanDoval.
In a battle of former PIAA champions, Martellotti registered a 2-1 win in triple overtime in his 130-pound title match against South Side Beaver's John Prezzia.
"I placed sixth here last year after losing three times in one day," Martellotti said. "I wanted to make sure that didn't happen again this time."
Cunningham won the 160-pound title with a 10-5 win against Central Dauphin's Kenny Courts.
"Watching Frankie and Dane win before I wrestled really helped," said Cunningham, who placed third at 152 last year. "It helped my confidence and took some of the pressure off."
Young is only the 14th wrestler in the 42-year history of the tournament to win three or more titles. Central Dauphin's Marshall Peppelman became the 15th with his convincing 16-0 blanking of Chris Moon, of Fauquier, Va., in the 152-pound final.
Peppelman and teammate Tony Dallago won titles for Central Dauphin.
The Rams won a second consecutive team title as they outscored runner-up Shady Side Academy, 206.5-172. Dallago recorded an 11-2 win against SanDoval in the 189-pound final.
Blue Mountain's Josh Kindig was also a repeat champion. He made his third title appearance and claimed his second title with a 0:54 pin in the 135-pound title match against Corey Mock of Chapel Hill, N.C.
Derry's Jimmy Gulibon was the only freshman to claim a title. Gulibon posted a 10-1 major decision victory against Blue Mountain's Corey Keener in the 103-pound final.
"I was pretty nervous being one of the youngest wrestlers in the tournament," Gulibon said. "I didn't really know what to expect, but I'm pleased with the results."
Also winning titles from the WPIAL were Latrobe's Nathan Pennesi and Hempfield's Jake Kemerer.
Pennesi claimed the 125-pound title with a 7-2 win against Clinton McAlester of Clovis, Calif. Kemerer recorded a 14-6 win against Bellefonte's Christian Oberle in the 171-pound final.
"I placed fourth as a sophomore and third last year, so I felt I had a good chance to make it to the finals this year," Pennesi said. "The experience I picked up in my last two appearances really helped."
