Red Sox and Penny reach agreement

The Boston Red Sox and pitcher Brad Penny reached a preliminary agreement on a $5 million, one-year contract. The team also struck a tentative agreement with catcher Josh Bard and both deals are pending physicals.

• Pitcher Daniel Cabrera formalized his one-year, $2.6 million contract with the Washington Nationals after passing a physical. The 6-foot-7 right-hander had MRI exams on his throwing shoulder and elbow as part of his physical. Cabrera went on the disabled list with the Baltimore Orioles in September after experiencing pain and tingling in his right elbow during a side session.

Roger Clemens' name is being removed from a sports medicine institute at a Houston hospital in another dent to the legacy of the major league baseball pitcher since he was linked to steroid use. The Roger Clemens Institute for Sports Medicine at Memorial Hermann will shed Clemens' name effective Jan. 1 "to better reflect its commitment to all sports and athletes," the Houston-based health system said.

Hockey

Magnus Svensson Paajarvi had two goals and two assists to help Sweden rout Latvia, 10-1, at the world junior hockey championship in Ottawa. The United States (2-0) plays its next game tonight against Kazakhstan. Nicklas Lasu also had two goals for Sweden, which improved to 3-0-0 at the tournament with one game remaining in the preliminary round. Sweden faces Russia tomorrow.

Harness racing

Hambletonian winner Deweycheatumnhowe was voted 3-year-old colt trotter of the year, record-setting earner Somebeachsomewhere was voted top 3-year-old colt pacer and 10 other horses earned Dan Patch awards as divisional champions. Mister Big, who won 11 of 14 races, was voted top older male pacer for the second year in a row in balloting by the U.S. Harness Writers Association. Deweycheatumnhowe was named on all 158 ballots returned, while Somebeachsomewhere got 155 votes and Mister Big received 153.

Skiing

Maria Riesch of Germany won a women's World Cup night slalom in Semmering, Austria, for her second victory of the season, while American Lindsey Vonn finished third and remained the leader in the standings. Riesch, who led after the first run, overcame an error in her second run and finished with a combined time of 1:55.97. Tanja Poutiainen of Finland was second, 0.21 behind Riesch, and Vonn was 0.72 behind.

Speed skating

Heather Richardson won the women's 500 and 1,000 meters and Shani Davis took the men's 1,000, each taking the overall sprint lead at the U.S. Long Track Speed Skating National Championships in West Allis, Wis. Richardson, of High Point, N.C., won the 500 in 39.36 seconds and the 1,000 in 1:18.49. Davis, a Chicago native ranked No. 1 in the World Cup standings in the 1,000, won the race in 1:09.20. Combined with a second-place finish in the 500, he was the men's overall sprint leader with 70.220 points.
