Among some of the more unappetizing scenes encountered by inspectors:
Mold in an ice machine this year at Kretzler's Tavern on Babcock Boulevard, a violation noted for three straight years. A call to the owner was not returned.
Raw sausage being stored in the same container as ready-to-eat lunch meats this year at Lupi's Famous Pizza on Babcock Boulevard. The owner, who would not give his name, said he disputed the finding.
Eggs, macaroni, potato salad, cheese and lunch meats being stored at unsafe temperatures in early March this year at Chuck E. Cheese's on McKnight Road. The same problem was found in inspections the previous two years, but was not found in a follow-up inspection in late March, a spokeswoman for the chain said.
"Numerous" dead roaches on the floor and live ones scurrying under woks and the front steam table in 2006 at Manchu Wok at Ross Park Mall. The inspector visited because a customer had complained of finding a roach in his rice. Dead roaches were noted in two follow-up inspections that year, but not in the most recent inspection in July 2008. A call to the owner was not returned.
"Rodent droppings too numerous to count" on the cellar floor and "evidence of a sewage backup" in May last year at Fox and Hound English Pub at the Shoppes at Northway. The district manager for the chain said the problem was in an area where no food was stored.
Raw chicken lifted over cooked pasta contaminating it with raw chicken juices, and a dirty towel resting on top of raw ground meat this year at Cheesecake Factory on Ross Park Mall Drive. The inspector discarded the foods. "Cheesecake Factory has a very high standard for food safety and cleanliness. Our training programs are second to none," chief marketing officer Mark Mears said.
Roaches in the kitchen and dead ones on food storage shelves this year at China Star on McKnight Road following similar roach sightings last year. In 2006, an inspector reported a chef arranging cooked broccoli on plates using his bare hand, the same bare hand he had used seconds earlier to cover a sneeze and wipe his nose. A call to the owner was not returned.
