CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

Jan. 3 Beginner Cross-country Skiing. Kooser State Park. Introduces participants to equipment and basic cross-country ski techniques, and covers fewer miles at a slower pace than the regular programs. Beginner cross-country skiing: Jan. 3

Part of the problem with getting newbies interested in outdoors activities is the startup cost. Who wants to spend hundreds of dollars on basic equipment and accessories before deciding if they're interested in, say, cross-country skiing? Venture Outdoors has it all figured out. Not sure about the whole Nordic thing? At a beginner cross-country skiing outing, VO experts explain basic equipment and techniques before leading an easy, slow-paced ski tour. Here's the coolest part -- equipment rental is available. Call for details. The trip runs 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and the cost is $16.50 for Venture Outdoors member, $27.50 nonmembers. Jan. 10 Cook Forest State Park. Meets 10:30 a.m. at Log Cabin Inn Environmental Learning Classroom for moderately flat, 4-mile interpretive cross-country trip to Indian Springs. Jan. 17 Laurel Mountain. Easy, intermediate ski just south of U.S. Route 30. Scenic trails, warming hut. Meets 10 a.m. at McDonald's on Route 30 in Latrobe, or $8.50 carpool 57 miles from Monroeville. Sierra Club, 724-459-3012.

Jan. 23 Winter Mountain Adventure. Jennings Environmental Education Center, Slippery Rock. Two-night winter outdoors activity sampler includes cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, sledding, winter ecology, Civilian Conservation Corps discussion, horse-drawn sleigh ride at locations in Laurel Hill, Laurel Ridge and Ohiopyle State Parks. Feb. 21 Snowman in the Forest Day. Cook Forest State Park.
