Man shot to death by intruders in Sheraden
Saturday, December 27, 2008

A gunman who entered a home in Sheraden with four other people early yesterday told a man who lived there, "I shoot people," before fatally wounding the man in the chest, investigators said.

The victim, Charles F. Hall Jr., 29, died early yesterday after the gunman forced him against a wall and shot him once in the chest. They also held two women for a time but did not harm them, Pittsburgh police said.

Police said one of the women recognized at least one of the intruders, and based on her description, they obtained an arrest warrant for Darryl Reese, 18, of McKees Rocks.

One of the women told homicide investigators Mr. Reese and another man wearing a ski mask over part of his face arrived at the home in the 2700 block of Bergman Street at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday.

The two men got a cigarette from Mr. Hall and left, police said. Several minutes later, Mr. Reese again knocked and was admitted to the home, the witness told police.

But this time, Mr. Reese was accompanied by four other men, all armed with handguns, police said. They forced the woman to lie on the floor while the gunman accosted Mr. Hall, police said.

The victim stood up and said, "Hold up. What's going on here?" the witness told police.

The gunman responded, "I'm here because I am a shooter. I shoot people."

He backed Mr. Hall against a wall and shot him once, police said.

The intruders found a second woman asleep in an adjoining bedroom. They ordered her to join the first woman and forced the two of them to lie face down on the floor as they left.

Four of the men wore black clothing. A fifth man wore an orange jacket, police said.

Mr. Hall was conscious and alert when paramedics took him to Allegheny General Hospital. He died at 2:21 a.m.

Mr. Hall recently avoided a jail sentence following his arrest last January on 13 charges, including theft, receiving stolen property, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, fleeing and eluding police, and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

He pleaded guilty Dec. 17 to six of the charges, and Common Pleas Judge John A. Zottola sentenced him to two years of probation.

In October 2007, he was arrested on drug trafficking charges. He pleaded guilty in September to possessing drugs.

Investigators would not say if Mr. Hall's court cases were related to the home invasion or his slaying.

Mr. Reese is black, about 5-feet, 8 inches tall, and weighs 145 pounds. His last known address was on Robinson Street in McKees Rocks.
