Friday, December 26, 2008
Andrew Cressler, Plum

Cressler is bringing purple pride alive. A 6-4 senior forward on the basketball team, he is one of the leading scorers in the WPIAL with a 25.8 average. He has not been held below 23 points all season. Next up is a game Monday against Hampton.

Nakira Emerson, Aliquippa

Her father, Marvin, is Aliquippa's boys' basketball coach, and the daughter must have learned a thing or two from dad. Nakira, a 5-foot-10 freshman on the girls' team, had 19 points and 19 rebounds in one recent game. She is averaging in double figures.

Markel Walker, Schenley

Walker, a senior guard, has been on the mark, averaging 25.9 points a game. She's one of the best girls' basketball players in the state and has signed with UCLA.

Serra hockey team

Serra always has one of the top teams in the area, and the Eagles are flying high again. They got off to a 9-1 start, and Erik Manetta and Jarrett Ruchka are two of the top three scorers in PIHL Class A.

Shady Side Academy Wrestling team

After placing third at the Powerade tournament last year, the Indians are thinking bigger for this year's tournament. They have seven place-winners back from last year and could challenge for first place in the two-day event (Monday and Tuesday).
