After doing it just once in his first 10 seasons, Ward had back-to-back 100-yard games for the second time this season, finishing with seven catches for 109 yards against the Titans. Ward also caught one of the two touchdown passes by Ben Roethlisberger -- a 21-yarder over the middle that gave the Steelers a 14-10 lead in the third quarter. The touchdown was set up when Ward made a leaping 21-yard catch over safety Chris Hope one play earlier. Ward needs 27 more receiving yards for his first 1,000-yard season since 2004.
A quick look at yesterday's top performances:
1. JOHNSON'S 21-YARD TD RUN: The Titans converted just 3 of 14 third-down opportunities against the Steelers (21.4 percent), but they were more efficient on fourth down, converting 2 of 2. None, though, was bigger than the fourth-and-1 at the Steelers' 21 when QB Kerry Collins faked a handoff toward the right and option-pitched the ball to the left to rookie RB Chris Johnson. With only CB Ike Taylor in front of him, Johnson cut inside his attempted tackle and scored to give the Titans a 17-14 lead. "That's what he does," Taylor said. "He makes people miss."
2. HUT-HUT HOKE: It looked as though the Titans had to settle for a 22-yard field goal after a Ben Roethlisberger interception, but NT Chris Hoke was penalized for yelling out a fake snap count on fourth down, allowing the Titans to score a touchdown and make it 24-14 rather than 20-14.
3. ROETHLISBERGER'S FIRST INTERCEPTION: Trailing 17-14 after Johnson's touchdown, Roethlisberger overthrew his pass for Ward. It was intercepted by safety Michael Griffin, who returned the pick 32 yards to the Titans' 37 to set up another touchdown.
4. McCAREINS' CATCH WAS JUSTIN TIME: On third-and-20 at the Steelers' 40, Collins had little pressure and threw a 19-yard sideline pass to Justin McCareins against a zone defense, setting up the fourth-and-1 play on which Johnson scored the winning 21-yard touchdown.
5. ROETHLISBERGER FUMBLES AT THE 1: With the first-and-goal at the Titans' 3 in a scoreless game, the Steelers failed to get any points when Parker lost 1 yard on first down, 3 on second down, then Roethlisberger fumbled at the 1 trying to scramble for a touchdown from the 7.5
That was the passer rating by Titans QB Kerry Collins, who completed 20 of 29 passes for 216 yards and one touchdown. He also was not intercepted. It is the first 100-plus passer rating against the Steelers this season.
The play by play will indicate that OLB James Harrison was called for unsportsmanlike conduct on a 22-yard field-goal attempt by Tennessee's Rob Bironas near the end of the third quarter, keeping alive a drive that resulted in a 24-14 Titans lead. But, according to the players, the culprit was NT Chris Hoke, who was penalized when he tried to confuse the Titans by barking out a fake snap count. "I've been in there many times and I hear players do that all the time," said DE Brett Keisel. "But they usually never call that."
"We just got our tails whipped, plain and simple. Ain't no ifs, ands or buts. Sooner or later it was going to happen. Those boys played their butts off. They handed it to us." -- Ike Taylor, Steelers cornerback
The good news is, Willie Parker finally went over 100 yards. The bad news is it took him three games to do so. The two-time Pro Bowl running back continues to struggle, gaining just 29 yards on 18 carries against the Titans and having six running plays for negative yards, three more for zero yards. Since a 31-yard run on his final carry in New England, Parker has managed just 101 yards on 44 carries the past three games, an average of 2.3 yards per carry. That is his lowest three-game stretch since 2005.
