Christmas came a month early this year for Jess Cutter of Mount Washington.

On Nov. 25, Satia Marie Cutter was born, and if you press Ms. Cutter on what she wants for Christmas, she can't come up with anything at all.

"I have everything I want. I got her," she said.

After a difficult pregnancy filled with uncertainty and nine months of morning sickness, Satia came into the world 11 days late, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces, with a full head of shiny black hair.

When Ms. Cutter first found out she was pregnant at 16, she was concerned her grandparents, with whom she lives, would be upset. Instead, she found support from Mary and George Faloney.

"I said, 'Jess, calm down, we'll work with it,' " remembered Mrs. Faloney.

She said she accompanied Ms. Cutter, now 17, to every doctor's visit and every parenting class at Magee-Womens Hospital.

"It's actually going to happen, [that] is what she realized" after taking the classes, Mrs. Faloney said.

They got help through Every Child Inc., an organization that, among other things, helps teen mothers prepare for their first child and provides information on parenting after the baby is born.

Susie Molek, a doula with Every Child, was there every step of the way, including the 22-hour labor.

She helped Ms. Cutter create a "game plan" to prepare for the birth, which helped ease any anxieties.

"It helped me look forward to it," Ms. Cutter said.

Now, she's looking forward to finishing high school and possibly moving on to cosmetology school, and she's thankful her daughter has a full head of hair.

As she smoothed the baby's hair, Satia grabbed Ms. Cutter's finger.

"She always holds my hand and stares at me," she said. "It's like, 'I know who you are, Mom.' "

Though Ms. Cutter already got her wish, Satia's first Christmas will be special for the whole family with help from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Goodfellows Fund.

Goodfellows, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, raises money for and distributes toys to needy families throughout the region.
