Fantasy Football Picks: Week 16
Thursday, December 18, 2008

You don't need me advising you to start Drew Brees and Andre Johnson, or to steer clear of Ken Dorsey and Rudi Johnson. So I'll spare you the obvious recommendations, focusing instead on the players typically on the bubble of most fantasy rosters. Here are my picks to roll, and get rolled, in Week 16.

Watch 'em roll

Matt Schaub, QB, Texans at Raiders. Leave it to Oakland to extinguish the only bright spot on its team. Prior to Week 13, they had held some of the league's most prolific passers well below their season averages. Then the floodgates opened, allowing Philip Rivers and Matt Cassel to pour seven passing TDs on them over the last two games. Schaub has been on a nice roll since returning from his knee injury, despite facing two solid secondaries. Look for him to notch a TD trifecta against this reeling unit.

Pierre Thomas, RB, Saints at Lions. If he isn't the top fantasy RB of the week, something has gone seriously awry. Now that Reggie Bush is out of the picture, Thomas will have virtually no competition for carries, and figures to remain a key part of the Saints' prolific passing attack as well. He's collected eight TDs over the past five weeks, and is a virtual lock to add at least one more against the hapless Lions.

Chester Taylor, RB, Vikings vs. Falcons. As any Adrian Peterson owner can tell you, Taylor has scored a touchdown in each of the last four games. That's twice as many as AP, and there's no reason to think the backup won't keep up his scoring frenzy against the sub-par Atlanta run defense. Peterson still gets the bulk of the carries, but Taylor has become a potent TD vulture, and a more consistent contributor in the passing game.

Kevin Walter, WR, Texans at Raiders. As projected in this space last week, Walter's seesaw season continued with a disastrous eight-yard effort against the Titans. Now watch him bounce back nicely, per his pattern, in this contest. For more reasons to start him, see Schaub, Matt above.

Anthony Gonzalez, WR, Colts at Jaguars. Just days removed from posting a measly six yards against the Lions, he isn't the safest of bets in tonight's matchup. But starting in place of the injured Marvin Harrison, Gonzalez's targets should increase substantially. He has managed to find the end zone twice over the last four games, so don't be surprised to see him score again against the Jags' mediocre secondary.

Roll 'em back

Tyler Thigpen, QB, Chiefs vs. Dolphins. Over the past three weeks, Miami has not surrendered a touchdown of any kind, rushing or passing. Granted, their competition has been weak, but what would you call the 2-12 Chiefs? Thigpen's production has cooled-off since his blistering mid-season run, and is unlikely to heat up against a Dolphins defense gunning for the postseason.

Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins vs. Eagles. The old adage of "sticking with your studs" come playoff time doesn't always apply, especially when your stud is playing more like a gelding. As shocking as it seems, Portis hasn't crossed the goal line since Week 7, and has failed to post 100 total yards in a game since Week 12 against Seattle. He and his plummeting team face the league's fifth-ranked run defense this week.

Chris Johnson, RB, Titans vs. Steelers. The Titans' vaunted RB tandem was held in check by the Ravens and Jets, two of the league's top run defenses, earlier in the season. Last week, a very average Houston team put the clamps down. Now come the Steelers to present perhaps the stiffest test to date. Johnson is a better bet than LenDale White, but neither is likely to break loose for big yardage. Don't be surprised if Pittsburgh pulls back the curtain on an overachieving Tennessee squad whose stars are fading fast.

Torry Holt, WR, Rams vs. 49ers. Don't get overly excited about Holt's return to the end zone last week. It came against Seattle, the league's worst pass defense, and it was just his third scoring reception of the season. The 49ers' defense has allowed an average of only 155 passing yards per game over the past three weeks, and shouldn't have much trouble reining in Marc Bulger and company.

Santonio Holmes, WR, Steelers at Titans. If not for a disputed TD grab in the game's final seconds, Holmes would have posted yet another terrible stat line in Week 15. His disappointing season should continue against one of the league's stingiest defenses. Ben Roethlisberger has been struggling as well, so don't count on much help from either player in your title matchup.

TAKING A FLIER

Isaac Bruce, WR, 49ers at Rams. He has been a decent WR3 over the past several weeks, and you can expect him to get every opportunity to excel in his St. Louis homecoming. Just as Randy Moss celebrated twice against his former Oakland mates last week, old man Ike will show the Rams that they let him go a bit early, too.

DON'T BE THE BONEHEAD WHO ...

... forgets the Saturday night matchup between the Cowboys and Ravens. The NFL added yet another twist to your fantasy championship planning; so please, pay attention.
