Here is a look at the accomplishments of some students from the South Hills.

• Eighteen Bethel Park High School musicians auditioned and won spots in honors concerts.

Eleven were chosen to perform in the recent Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's Honors Band Concert at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. The juniors were Kelsey Fink, clarinet; Julie Hollis, clarinet, first chair; Ryan Kinzler, tuba; Andrew Roberts, trombone, first chair; Dan Salera, French horn, first chair; and Kayla Searles, clarinet. The sophomores were Jeff Bright, bassoon, and Spencer Kun, oboe. Selected as alternates were seniors Brieana DeNardo, clarinet, and Gabrielle Mingrone, bassoon; and junior Lauren Hicks, clarinet.

Seven have been selected to play in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's District One Jazz Band Concert at 1 p.m. Jan. 10 at Upper St. Clair High School. The seniors are Travis Klein, alto saxophone; Chris Mills, bass guitar; and Zak Parks, trumpet. Also selected were junior Andrew Roberts, trombone, and sophomore Jennifer Searles, trombone; Juniors Bo Collins, trombone; and Alex Conroy, guitar, have been named alternates.

The student musicians are taught by band director David Buetzow.

• Thirteen Bethel Park High School vocalists have been selected to perform in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's District Chorus Concert on Jan. 16 at South Fayette High School.

The seniors are Maggie Barr, soprano 2; Ben Buchwald, bass 2; Laurel Hefferan, alto 1; and Marissa Virgin, soprano 1. The juniors are Gabe Robinson, tenor 2; and Dan Salera, bass 1. The sophomores are George Barr, tenor 1, David Dickey, tenor 1, Kevin Harvey, bass 1, Joe Henkels, tenor 2, Alex Pantages, bass 2, Marco Pilotta, bass 1, and Mandy Slowey, soprano 2.

The students are taught by choral director Todd Kuczawa.

• Twenty-four Bethel Park High School students took part in apprenticeship programs sponsored by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. The apprenticeships focus on arts, sciences and humanities and provide students with experiences in their fields of interest.

The participating seniors and their fields are Ashley Bobak, education; Brandi Carpenter and Veronica Rigatti, zoo animal care; Breann Ford, broadcast journalism; Steven Gaddis and Corey Lakomy, architecture; Scott Ramey, filmmaking; Aveanna Salicce, Web design; Kevin Stay, avian care and training; Richard Willhide, international affairs; and Cody Wolfe, marine biology.

The juniors are Robert Amrhein and Erin Gerst, zoo animal care; Nick Colarosa, engineering; Melissa Dolan, business; Kelsey Fink and Sean Hensler, biotechnology; Jana Koch, architecture; Emily Miller, astronomy; Robert Raeder, musical theater; Kaitlyn Rinella, nursing; Sara Spadacene, acting; and Julia Zgorliski, civil and environmental engineering.

The sophomore is Kevin Cheberenchick, playwriting.

• Brentwood resident Anne Perri, a broadcast journalism major at Point Park University, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Pittsburgh chapter of Women in Film and Media.

The award, presented during the chapter's annual Opal Awards, is based on work and academic experience, content quality and presentation in answering scholarship application questions, and recommendations.

Gio Poliziani, of Green Tree, finished second in the inaugural Monongahela Cup golf tournament by shooting a 75.

He was one of four members of the Community College of Allegheny County North Campus Golf Team who competed in October against West Virginia Northern Community College.

Richard Helfrich, an assistant professor of graphic and communication design at La Roche College, has won a $500 Faculty Thesis Proposal Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Mr. Helfrich, of Bethel Park, earned his master's of fine arts this year.

• The Mt. Lebanon High School Model United Nations team kicked off its season with strong performances at recent tournaments. At the University of Pittsburgh tournament, the team won first and second place overall. More than 30 schools from Western Pennsylvania competed.

The following students won first place awards in their committees: Serafina Lanna, B. Ryan Pollack, John McGinty, Steph Kuo, Steph Sheffler, Lauren Kuntz, and Gina Federico.

The high school placed first in the Large School Category at University of Virginia's Model United Nations conference. More than 1,000 students from across the nation competed in the tournament.

Individual top winners were: Ryan Pollock, Ben Hutchinson, Nick Osborne, Romel Nicholas and Anthony Kuzma. Runners-up in their committees were: Jacob Wildfire, Lauren Kuntz, Cate Matthews, Andrea Corona, Matt Caplan, and Steve Metz.

The team sponsors are high school social studies teachers Peter DiNardo, George Savarese and Adam Lumish.

• The Upper St. Clair High School Pantheon Choir, directed by Lorraine Milovac, will join the Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra in its holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the USC theater. It will perform Gustav Holst's "Christmas Day" and William Grant Still's "Christmas in the Western World" with the orchestra, among other selections.

There will also be a reading of Clement Moore's "Twas the Night Before Christmas" with children invited on stage, featuring USC music department curriculum leader Paul Fox with the orchestra.

The Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra includes USC students Alonso Diaz, violin; and Stephen Wellard, cello. Paula Scandrol, who teachers in the district's elementary schools program, is concertmaster.

• Bethel Park High school freshman Stefany Phelps, on French horn, successfully auditioned and has been selected to perform in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's District 1 Junior High Orchestra Concert.

The concert will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 at Pine-Richland High School.

She is taught by music teacher Jonathan Derby.
