The American Film Institute has announced its outstanding movies for 2008, a list that includes both the blockbuster "The Dark Knight" and a couple of small movies with gems of leading performances.
Its roster, in alphabetical order:

"The Dark Knight"
"Frost/Nixon"
"Frozen River"
"Gran Torino"
"Iron Man"
"Milk"
"WALL-E"
"Wendy and Lucy"

The AFI, which honors those in front and behind the camera of movies and TV shows, will celebrate its selections at a Jan. 9 luncheon in Los Angeles.
A 13-member jury spent two days deliberating about the movies of 2008. Leonard Maltin chaired the panel, which also included Richard Schickel from Time, Anne Thompson from Variety and writer-producer-director Robert Towne.
The next stop on the awards train is Thursday when nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards are announced.
"My Tale of Two Cities," Carl Kurlander's homegrown movie, will move to the Oaks Theater in Oakmont where it will play Friday through Tuesday at 5 p.m.
"My Tale" examines Kurlander's return to Pittsburgh as the city tries to reinvent itself. Its local debut was during the Three Rivers Film Festival.
On Friday, the theater also will open the "Fireproof," starring Kirk Cameron as a self-centered firefighter whose marriage is slipping away, and (for Friday and Saturday only) "Repo! The Genetic Opera."
Moviegoers who donate cash, socks, gently used blankets or sleeping bags, coats for the homeless and non-perishable food items will get $5 off the $10 admission for a 7 p.m. benefit showing Thursday of "Where God Left His Shoes" at Pittsburgh Filmmakers' Melwood Screening Room.
"Where God Left His Shoes" is the story of a homeless family on Christmas Eve that refuses to break apart during the darkest time of their lives. John Leguizamo is among the stars of the movie with the tagline "Hope is the greatest gift of all."
A short panel discussion on homelessness in Pittsburgh will follow the screening. Tickets can be bought at the door. The movie will play only once.
