Tampa Bay running back Warrick Dunn became the sixth player in NFL history with 10,000 career yards rushing and 500 receptions in a game yesterday against his former Atlanta team.
Dunn, who spent the first five years of his career with the Buccaneers and the past six with the Falcons, caught a 9-yard pass from quarterback Brian Griese to get his 500th catch.
San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson is the only other active player with 10,000 yards rushing and 500 catches. Marcus Allen and Emmitt Smith are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Tiki Barber and Marshall Faulk are retired.
Owner Jerry Richardson, who is awaiting a heart transplant, attended yesterday's game between his Panthers and the visiting Broncos. The 72-year-old owner was told this week during a hospital stay related to the recent installation of a pacemaker that he needs a transplant. He was placed on a donor waiting list. In spite of his health, he was in a front row seat in his open-air suite at Bank of America Stadium. He appeared to be covered in a black and blue Panthers blanket. Richardson, who missed Monday night's 38-23 win against division-rival Tampa Bay, is the first former NFL player since George Halas to own a team. He and his two sons worked for years to get an NFL expansion team, a prospect at one time thought impossible for Charlotte.
Center Nick Hardwick was injured after throwing a block on a screen pass against Kansas City and carted from the field. The team said he suffered a concussion.
Quarterback Chad Pennington connected on his first six passes against the 49ers, extending his two-game streak to 17 consecutive completions to break Dan Marino's team record of 15 set in 1992.
Wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco drew a 15-yard taunting penalty for handing the ball to Redskins running back Clinton Portis on the Washington bench after he ran out of bounds after making a catch. "I was just having fun," Ocho Cinco said. "I didn't think I did anything wrong. I'm not sure why they called it a penalty."
Safety Dwight Smith was taken off the field on a cart in the second quarter against the Colts. The nine-year veteran injured his left ankle trying to make a tackle on a 2-yard touchdown run by Colts rookie Chad Simpson. He was helped to the cart, and his foot was elevated as he left the field.
Rookie wide receiver James Hardy was carted off the field with an injured left knee early in the first quarter of the game against the Jets. Hardy, the Bills' second-round pick out of Indiana, was injured while blocking down the right sideline on a 35-yard run by Marshawn Lynch to the Jets' 22. Lynch broke several tackles on the run before being taken down by Darrelle Revis. When the pile cleared, Hardy was laying on the turf on his back.
Wide receiver Marvin Harrison had two receptions to move past Tim Brown for third on the NFL career list. Harrison has 1,095 catches and needs seven to pass Cris Carter.
