Rising water closes Mon Wharf; snow causes travel delays
Friday, December 12, 2008

First rain, then snow, then high water.

A flood advisory from this afternoon until tomorrow evening for the Ohio River at Pittsburgh has been issued by the National Weather Service. Rising waters already have closed the Monongahela Wharf to parking.

At 8 a.m., the Ohio River sat at 17.1 feet. Flood stage is 25.0 feet. The river is expected to reach 19.6 feet by tomorrow morning, affecting the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. At 18.0 feet, water begins to flow onto the Mon Wharf.

Snow that began falling after changing from rain yesterday across Western Pennsylvania slowed the morning commute and caused school delays in some areas.

In Pittsburgh and its immediate suburbs, road crews treated most major thoroughfares. Some secondary roads, along with bridges and overpasses, were slippery. Standing water and slush froze overnight as temperatures dropped.
