Backup quarterback Pat Devlin won't be accompanying Penn State to Pasadena.
The redshirt sophomore has informed coach Joe Paterno he intends to transfer and will not be with the Nittany Lions when they face Southern California in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.
"The Penn State football program wishes him well at his new school," spokesman Jeff Nelson said in a statement last night.
Devlin is considering transferring to a Division I-AA school, according to a source, so he will be eligible to play next year. If Devlin were to enroll at a Division I-A school, he would have to sit out a year under NCAA rules, leaving him with just one year of eligibility.
Devlin, 6-4 and 221 pounds, who lost out to junior Daryll Clark in the quarterback derby in late August, played in 10 games and completed 25 of 47 passes for 459 yards and four touchdowns.
He stepped in after Clark was injured at Ohio State and rallied Penn State with 10 points in the fourth quarter of a 13-6 victory.
Seldom-used No. 3 quarterback Paul Cianciolo, a fifth-year senior, will back up Clark, a first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection. Wide receiver Derrick Williams, who has operated out of the quarterback spot from the Wildcat formation at various times, likely will be the No. 3 quarterback for the Rose Bowl.
Cianciolo has played in three games, completing 6 of 9 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.
