On the Radar: Things to watch and people to look for in district high school sports
Friday, December 05, 2008
Tom Droney, Sewickley Academy

When you are a 6-foot-5 basketball guard and have narrowed your list of colleges to Pitt, Notre Dame and Davidson, people tend to notice. Only a junior, Droney begins his season today (5 p.m. tipoff) against Sto-Rox in the Dynamos tournament at Springdale.

Maurice Carter, Aliquippa

He has become the go-to guy in the Quips' offense. He had had only 442 yards on 36 carries after the first seven games. In the past seven games, he has 927 yards on 123 attempts. Next up is Wilmington in the PIAA Class AA semifinals tonight.

Troy Webb, Clairton

Webb has played two games since taking over for injured QB Andrew Currington. All he has done is rush for 217 yards and complete 8 of 17 passes for 180 yards.

Shane Young, Penn-Trafford

Winning doesn't get old for Young. He enters wrestling season on a 90-match winning streak. He has won two PIAA titles in a row and has signed with West Virginia University. He will wrestle in the 112-pound division.

Harrison Smith, Fox Chapel

When it comes to scoring in basketball, Smith is one sly Fox. A 6-foot-2 senior guard, he is the returning leading scorer in the WPIAL, averaging 21.5 points a game last season. Fox Chapel opens the season tonight (7:30 tipoff) against Shady Side Academy.
