Ballesteros undergoes another brain operation

Five-time major champion Seve Ballesteros underwent more surgery yesterday, this time to drain fluid from his brain.

Ballesteros was in stable condition in the intensive care unit after the operation to implant a valve in his brain in Madrid, Spain.

Doctors also repaired a bone defect stemming from one of the procedures the golf great has undergone since his initial operation Oct. 24 to remove a malignant brain tumor.

A hospital official declined to say if the latest surgery meant the 51-year-old Ballesteros had taken a turn for the worse in his recovery. He had been released from intensive care Nov. 18 but remained hospitalized.

Ballesteros was first admitted Oct. 6 after fainting at Madrid's international airport.

Olympics

The British government agreed to cover more than a third of a funding shortfall for the country's Olympic sports at the 2012 London Games. The move clears the way for the British Olympic Association to pursue its target of finishing fourth in the medals table, matching its performance at the Beijing Games.

Sailing

Sebastien Josse of France leads the Vendee Globe round, the world yacht race, ahead of compatriot Yann Elies as the fleet heads further south into the stronger winds of the "Roaring Forties" and mountainous seas of the Southern Ocean. Further back, British skipper Jonny Malbon vowed to continue racing despite his yacht Artemis sustaining damage after colliding with what Malbon believed to be a whale on Monday while sailing along at more than 15 knots.

Auto racing

The Indy Racing League's developmental Firestone Indy Lights series will have 15 races next season, including two in Canada for its first events outside the United States. The Indy Lights schedule includes races in Toronto July 11 and Edmonton July 26, both on temporary street circuits. The race at Edmonton City Centre Airport is one of nine on the same day as IndyCar Series races, along with ones at Long Beach, Kansas, Milwaukee, Kentucky, Mid-Ohio, Infineon, Chicagoland and the second race at St. Petersburg, Fla. The April 4 opener at St. Petersburg, along with Iowa, Watkins Glen, Toronto and the season finale at Homestead-Miami will be held on the day before the companion IndyCar race. The May 22 Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is scheduled two days before the Indy 500.
