The cousin of a pregnant woman found shot to death early yesterday in her Hill District apartment has been charged with her slaying after police said they found him standing in her foyer wearing blood-soaked clothes.
Deaundra M. Williams, 21, of the Hill District, is charged with homicide in the death of Shalane N. Graham, 20, who police said was two months pregnant when she died.
The shooting happened about 3 a.m. in Ms. Graham's apartment in the 200 block of Burrows Street, where at least three people had been sleeping. Police said Ms. Graham had thrown a party there earlier in the evening, but they were still piecing together details about what led to her death.
A witness told police she was asleep on Ms. Graham's couch but was awakened by a lone gunshot. She said she saw blood on Ms. Graham's bedroom door and then found Ms. Graham lying on the floor near the kitchen, according to a criminal complaint filed by police. The woman left the apartment and called 911.
Officers forced open the apartment's bolted door when they arrived and heard a man inside say, "Chill, chill, hold on a minute," the complaint said.
Once inside, they found Ms. Graham lying at the top of a staircase, face down in a pool of blood. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Detectives recovered a single 9mm shell casing from a hallway near Ms. Graham's bedroom door and found a 9mm semiautomatic pistol on the floor behind the front door, according to the complaint.
In the foyer, officers also found Mr. Williams, who told them later during questioning that he owned the gun, the complaint said.
Mr. Williams also told police that "he had fired the gun earlier in the day, but said that he did not remember shooting the victim," according to the complaint.
Detectives noticed that Mr. Williams' three shirts were "soaked through to the skin" with blood, the complaint said. His pants were also blood-spattered, though Mr. Williams "denied having any contact with the victim."
A motive for the slaying was unknown last night, Lt. Dan Herrmann said.
Neighbors described Ms. Graham as a caring mother to her 2-year-old daughter. They said she had recently moved to the sprawling Hill District apartment complex, where she lived alone.
A makeshift memorial of teddy bears, flowers and a glowing candle, with Ms. Graham's picture in the center, sat near the mangled front door of her building last night. The apartment remained a sealed crime scene.
Mr. Williams was arraigned last night and is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.
