HIKING

Dec. 3 High-Energy Hike. Schenley Park. Brisk evening walk through park, followed by an optional aerobic workout up 36 flights of stairs to the top of the Cathedral of Learning. Scubapalooza: Dec. 6-7

If the thought of scuba diving conjures images of warm blue oceans, bikinis and sunken treasures, think cold asphalt, winter jackets and South Side, Pittsburgh. Scubapalooza is a two-day festival of all things associated with self-contained underwater breathing apparatuses. Check out demonstrations of the latest diving gear, current diving information and a series of seminars. Most Scubapalooza workshops are free, but Saturday's Technical Shipwreck Diving Workshop, 3-6 p.m., with shipwreck authors and Discovery Channel hosts Gary Gentile and Richie Kohler, requires pre-registration and is $79 per seat.

Scubapalooza is held at two locations: Dec. 6: Pittsburgh Scuba Center rear entrance, 2429 East Carson St., South Side. Dec. 7: Ibew Ball Room, 5 Hot Metal Street, South Side. For details call 412-381-3181.

Ken Underkoffer, president of the Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited State Council, speaks about the status of the state's brook trout fishery including its history, biology and threats to its survival, and discusses the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture and other programs to preserve, protect and restore brook trout habitat.
