NFL Notebook: Hamstring sidelines WR Burress
Saturday, November 29, 2008

Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will miss the game tomorrow against Washington with a sore right hamstring.

Burress, the former Steelers wide receiver, was injured originally in the Giants' win against Baltimore Nov. 16, then aggravated the injury in the opening series Sunday against Arizona, and sat out the rest of that game.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said yesterday that Burress "is progressing, no doubt. He is getting better."

Domenik Hixon, still dealing with an ankle injury, will start in Burress' place.

The last time Burress missed a game was Nov. 5, 2006, when he sat out with a back injury.

He played in every game for the Super Bowl champion Giants last season despite a persistent ankle injury.

Linebacker Jonathan Goff (hamstring) also will not play against the Redskins, while three players -- running backs Brandon Jacobs (knee) and Ahmad Bradshaw (neck) and defensive tackle Fred Robbins (shoulder) -- are listed as questionable. Coughlin said Jacobs practiced yesterday, but Bradshaw and Robbins could not.

Meanwhile, Hixon and defensive ends Justin Tuck (lower leg) and Jerome McDougle (knee) practiced fully and are listed as probable for the game.

Dolphins

Linebacker Joey Porter has been fined $7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct in Miami's 48-28 loss to New England Sunday. Porter was fined for verbally abusing the opponent after the play was over. It has been a rough week for Porter, the former Steelers linebacker, who apologized Wednesday for not leaving the field as coach Tony Sparano ordered Sunday.

Cowboys

MRI tests on injured linebacker DeMarcus Ware and running back Marion Barber revealed no significant damage a day after both were injured in Dallas' win against Seattle. An MRI test on Ware's hyper-extended left knee showed no ligament damage. An MRI on Barber's right fifth toe, which was dislocated, revealed no fracture. Both players will receive treatment throughout the weekend and will be evaluated daily next week.

Panthers

Chris Gamble could have been one of the most coveted free agent cornerbacks in the NFL this offseason. But Gamble didn't want the uncertainty, and the Carolina Panthers rewarded him with a lucrative deal that will keep him in Charlotte through the 2014 season. In the middle of perhaps his best season, Gamble signed a six-year contract extension that agent Carl Poston said makes him one of the top five paid cornerbacks in the league.

Bengals

The Bengals placed guard Andrew Whitworth and guard/offensive tackle Scott Kooistra on injured reserve. Both were hurt Nov. 16 against Philadelphia, Whitworth sustained an ankle injury and Kooistra a knee injury. They were inactive against the Steelers last week. The club also signed rookie offensive tackle Kirk Barton from the Miami practice squad and first-year cornerback Geoffrey Pope from Cincinnati's own practice squad.
