The value of athletics
Friday, November 28, 2008

Many people think that sports have little value but they can teach many important life skills such as cooperation, dedication and perseverance. It can teach you that even if you are the underdog you should always work hard to achieve your dreams.

As a running back/fullback for the Bethel Park Black Hawks, Jimmy Karam knows what it is like to be the underdog and to work hard to overcome.

His team was considered the underdogs against the Gateway Gators last Saturday at Heinz Field but went on to win the WPIAL Class AAAA championship and has a shot at a state title.

It is the first time in its 100-year history that Bethel Park has won a WPIAL football title.

In an interview this week, Jimmy told me he started playing football when he was 9. He had undeveloped skills and no previous training.

In 1999, he joined the local recreation team with many of his current teammates and went on to win two championships.

He credits his success to practice, practice, practice. Because he has been a football fan (especially of his beloved Steelers) all his life, his hard work has given him a greater appreciation of the game.

Jimmy described the atmosphere in the Heinz Field locker room as "electric," and added that being the underdog gave his team increased drive and determination.

He said he has learned many valuable skills from his football experiences that will serve him well for the rest of his life. Besides good sportsmanship, his coach has taught him to never give up.

Bethel Park takes on State College at 7 tonight at North Allegheny.

Let's hope for another great game.
