The state is advising customers of Shadyside Village water supply in West Franklin Township, Armstrong County, not to use the water until further notice.
A boil-water advisory had been issued Monday by the state Department of Environmental Protection. Test results received today showed "levels of fecal coliform are high enough that they could pose a danger if the water were to come in contact with open sores or cuts," said DEP spokeswoman Teresa Candori.
She said the water system's owner was arranging to truck water to the 40 affected homes.
The DEP began testing the water after two customers were hospitalized with intestinal problems. It was investigating the source of the problem.
