The Carbon Fire Department in Hempfield has received a $600,000 federal grant to purchase a vehicle.

It was second largest of nine Assistance to Firefighters Grants awarded recently to fire companies in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia. The grants are from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency.

More than $2 million in grants were awarded to nine companies. Seven are in Pennsylvania, and Carbon is the only one in the southwestern part of the state.
