Penn State coach Joe Paterno had hip replacement surgery yesterday, less than 24 hours after his team clinched a share of the Big Ten championship and a berth in the Rose Bowl.
Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli performed the surgery on Paterno's right hip at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.
Sebastianelli said in a statement that the surgery was "successful" and that the soon-to-be 82-year-old Paterno is resting comfortably.
Paterno, the winningest coach in Division I-A with 383 victories, is expected to be back on his feet today.
According to the statement, he should be able to resume his coaching duties next Monday, when his players return to school after Thanksgiving break.
