A 17-year-old boy who appears to have been an innocent bystander was shot and killed shortly after midnight yesterday in the parking lot of the Save-A-Lot grocery store in Wilkinsburg, and a Penn Hills man is in custody, charged in his death.
Killed was Derrick House of Wilkinsburg.
Also shot and wounded in the arm and leg was a 15-year-old Wilkinsburg boy who was in fair condition yesterday at an area hospital, according to police.
According to police reports, the shooting was prompted by an altercation as people were leaving a nearby party, and there is no evidence that either victim was part of the original conflict.
Allegheny County police yesterday charged Donald Scott, 45, with criminal homicide in the teen's death.
In addition, Mr. Scott was charged with aggravated assault in connection with the shooting of the 15-year-old.
Mr. Scott, who is in the Allegheny County Jail, also is charged with a firearms violation.
According to the criminal complaint filed in Pittsburgh Magistrate Court by county Detective Patrick Kinavey, Wilkinsburg police received a 911 call for a disturbance on Stoner Way, near the Save-A-Lot, at about 12:10 a.m. As a Wilkinsburg officer pulled onto Stoner Way, he heard what he believed to be four gunshots.
The complaint said the Wilkinsburg officer observed two men who were shot, one in the head and the other in the leg. He called for paramedics and police backup.
During the ensuing investigation, witnesses told police that an "older black male" who was balding, heavyset and appeared to be about 47 years old was either part of the group hosting the party or was providing security for the party.
Witnesses told police that throughout the party, the suspect was "getting into altercations with kids at the party," in particular with a young man named "Troy."
At one point, the older man banged chairs together and ordered people to leave the party. The police complaint said a witness then saw the older man get into his sport utility vehicle and drive it into a parking lot "towards a group of kids that were standing near a pay phone."
The complaint said the man got out a handgun and fired four or five shots "until the gun was empty," then got into the SUV and drove away.
Mr. Scott was identified when a witness picked his picture from a photo array provided by police.
A police news release said Mr. Scott was arrested at an area hospital where he was seeking medical attention for injuries he received in the altercations.
