Tamburitzans get a leg up on coffee fundraiser

Hey, coffee lovers, there's a new roast in town. Make that four new roasts.

The selection of gourmet coffees is being introduced by the Friends of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans. That's the support organization for the Tamburitzans, a student performing folk ensemble with roots in Eastern and Southeastern European cultures, whose members rely on scholarship aid.

These roasts were developed by Javamania Coffee Roastery in Loves Park, Ill. Employee Daca Radich, whose daughter, Ali, is a Tamburitzan in her sophomore year, suggested a line of coffees for this year's fundraiser.

The first blend, "Dobro Jutro," which means good morning in many Southeastern European languages, is a medium blend.

"Tamburitzans' Private Blend" is a dark roast described as having smooth, sweet nuances.

"Palacinka" is the Croatian word for sweet crepes, usually filled with fruit or cream, and is a homage to that Central European delight.

"Apple Strudel" is said to taste like its name, accentuated by cinnamon and clove.

Millicent Novic, a volunteer for the Friends group, says this is an ongoing fundraiser and all proceeds directly benefit the students.

A 12-ounce bag is $10 and a bag of decaf is $11 (plus priority shipping starting at $4.80 per pound). A coffee club has been established for regular purchase. Members will receive a free Friends of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans apron.
