Washington Sunday: Peters bids adieu to prolific senior class
Sunday, November 23, 2008

It is tough to imagine a class getting more out of its four seasons of high school soccer than the seniors on this year's Peters Township boys' team.

After the group's first three years they had already won three section titles, a PIAA Class AAA title and made three trips to the WPIAL title game. Only one thing was missing for the seniors as the team prepared for this season, a WPIAL title.

The first three trips to the WPIAL title game resulted in one-goal losses. Peters Township hoped to avoid being lumped in with the National Football League's Buffalo Bills in terms of losing four consecutive title games.

The Indians battled through a tough 2-4 start and an 0-2 start in the section to win yet another section title and reach the WPIAL title game for the fourth consecutive year. This time the Peters Township seniors added the final piece to their trophy case with a 2-0 win against Fox Chapel in the WPIAL title game.

"It is not something that people get to do too often," said senior defender Greg Weimer on reaching four consecutive WPIAL title games.

"All the seniors, we talked about that a lot. This season we came together as a team and we turned it around after that slow start. It was hard, but I think that we learned quickly after a couple losses."

After winning the WPIAL title, the defending state champions then turned around in the PIAA playoffs and shut out City League champion Allderdice, 4-0, and defeated Fox Chapel again in a WPIAL title rematch, 4-1.

In the PIAA semifinals, Peters shut out Central Bucks East, 2-0. Christian Brandstetter and Nick Wilcox scored the game's only goals and the defense, led by goalie Ryan Koepka and center back Weimer, a Virginia Tech recruit, posted its third shutout in four games.

In a rematch of the 2007 state title game, Peters fell to Downingtown West, 2-1, last weekend. The difference this year may have been that Downingtown West returned all but one starter from last year while Peters came into the season having to replace five starters.

The Whippets jumped to a 2-0 lead but Peters quickly answered the second goal with a goal from Nate Troscinski. The Indians had a few chances in the last 20 minutes to tie the match but they were unable to cash in.

The biggest difference Peters coach Bob Dyer noticed from last year's team was the lack of one standout player. Last year, Shane Pruitt led the team in scoring and was named the Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year.

"To be honest, we don't really have one standout player," Dyer said. "It was every member of this team. Not to say that last year was not a total team effort, but this year was never focused on one individual. It was all about the team."

The group of seniors -- Koepka, Brandstetter, Wilcox, Weimer, Cody Partyka, Reid Cservak, Ryan Matthews, Tim Hutchins and Chris Beck -- will certainly go down as one of the top classes in the program's history.

"We came from 2-4 and wondering 'How are we going to make it into the playoffs?' to finish 20-6. That is fantastic and that is the thing I was most proud of, they really came together as a team," Dyer said.

"We were one of the top two teams in the state this year and for the seniors, they played in four WPIAL title games and two state title games. I cannot say enough about them. They accepted challenges and they continued to excel."

After addressing the seniors at the conclusion of the season, Dyer turned his attention to the underclassmen on his team.

"I said to them that the bar has been set and you have to pick it up," Dyer said. "That bar is way up there."
