Bethel Park beats Gateway for WPIAL Class AAAA title
First league football title in school's history
Saturday, November 22, 2008

For the first time in school history, Bethel Park has a WPIAL football champion.

Lyle Marsh had 149 yards of total offense and a touchdown run as the Black Hawks shocked top seed Gateway, 10-6, in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship this evening at Heinz Field.

Playing in its second WPIAL title contest and first since 1980, No. 2 seed Bethel Park (13-0) used a stifling defense to shut down the Gators (12-1) like no team had all season. Gateway, which is ranked among the top 10 nationally in some polls, was averaging 41.6 points per game and had not scored less than 24 heading into the contest.

But the Gators managed only 107 total yards and committed five turnovers, scoring only on a Dorian Bell 1-yard run midway through the second quarter. Gateway quarterback Robert Kalkstein was only 7-for-17 for 52 yards and two interceptions.

The Gators had averaged 268.2 yards rushing per game throughout the season but managed only 55 Saturday night. Besides the turnovers, Gateway missed an extra point and had a bad snap on a punt that resulted in a 33-yard loss and turnover on downs.

Bethel Park had 180 yards of total offense. Erik Olson was 4-for-11 for 26 yards and no interceptions. Marsh had 113 yards rushing on 27 carries and three receptions for 36 yards to lead all players in all four categories.

Marsh's touchdown came with 52 seconds to play in the first quarter.

After Bell pulled Gateway to within a point -- the extra point was blocked -- Bethel Park scored the final points of the game for either side before halftime. The two teams combined for only 144 yards and zero points in the second half.

Late in the first half, a bad snap on a Gateway punt set up the Black Hawks inside the 10, and Patrick Lydon hit a 27-yard field goal with

36 seconds left to extend Bethel Park's lead to 10-6.

The Gators were driving in the fourth quarter but Andrew Fossick sacked Kalkstein and forced a fumble that was recovered by Bethel Park's Rock Vomer with 7:59 to play.

Bethel Park had a Bre Ford touchdown reception on a screen pass during the third quarter called back due to a holding penalty.

The Black Hawks advance to the PIAA quarterfinals, where they will play State College Friday night at North Allegheny.
