WVU wins, White sets NCAA mark
Saturday, November 22, 2008

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- West Virginia's all-everything quarterback Patrick White continued to pile up the everythings today.

He broke one all-time NCAA record and surpassed a Big East mark while having a hand in all five Mountaineers touchdowns in their 35-21 defeat of Louisville in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

This senior performed a rare slide on a 4-yard run around left end with 5:38 remaining, and that was enough to pass by one yard the 4,289 career yards by Missouri's Brad Smith of 2002-05. And White still has two regular-season games and a bowl still to play.

White rushed for 200 yards on just 21 carries -- or roughly a first down every run -- and scored on jaunts of 66, 43 and 7 yards. He also threw for touchdown passes of 28 yards to Dorrell Jalloh and 25 to Jock Sanders in the second half for West Virginia (7-3, 4-1 Big East). It was his fourth 200-yard performance of his career.

The touchdowns meant he had accounted for 98 touchdowns in his career, rushing and passing, and that eclipses by three the total by Syracuse's Donovan McNabb (1995-98) career touchdowns.

Host Louisville seemed to have some momentum, going into halftime tied at 7-7 after West Virginia failed on nine plays from the Louisville 11-yard line or closer -- including three consecutive from the 1. One rush, by Jarrett Brown, on replays appeared to be a touchdown, but the replay official upheld the call. Then Noel Devine, who went on to rush for more than 100 yards for the first time in three games with 154, tripped and fell short of the end zone on the first half's final play.

White, who had 106 yards rushing by intermission, came out the second half and directed West Virginia to touchdowns on its opening two possessions and four of its first five.

The performance increased White's career record to 3-1 against Louisville, and he has directed West Virginia to victory in every road venue it has played in his regular seasons. He finished with more than 1,000 yards rushing and passing against the Cardinals (5-6, 1-5), losers of four straight -- a losing skein last seen in Louisville 11 seasons ago.

West Virginia plays Friday at Heinz Field in the 101st Backyard Brawl with Pitt, which upended the Mountaineers' national-championship-game aspirations last December with a 13-9 upset.
