Some tips for taking road to Heinz Field
Friday, November 21, 2008

The Fumbler has been to every WPIAL championship football game since 1974, and he plans to extend that streak tomorrow at Heinz Field. As a veteran of championship games, The Fumbler can share some secrets that will help your daylong football viewing much more enjoyable.

First, don't park at the stadium lots. You can save some loot by parking by West Park on the North Side and walking to the stadium -- that is what The Fumbler does. But don't park near a hydrant. The Fumbler got his Gremlin towed in 1990 for doing exactly that.

Next, don't try to sneak in any artificial noisemakers. The Fumbler almost got taken to the pokey a few years ago after a run-in with stadium security for having an air horn concealed in his Georgetown Starter parka. It isn't worth being hauled to the Zone 2 police station just to make a little extra noise.

Last, don't bet against The Fumbler come playoff time. He was 8-2 last week, 7-1 in WPIAL games. The only game he got wrong was Shady Side-Aliquippa. He is 49-11 in the postseason (22-2 in WPIAL games the past two weeks). His postseason percentage is .817 and his overall record is 499-120 (.806 pct.). Three of his WPIAL champion picks are still alive -- Gateway, Thomas Jefferson and Clairton. He picked Greensburg Central Catholic to win Class AA. Here are his thoughts on tomorrow's four WPIAL title games:

Bethel Park (12-0) vs. Gateway (12-0), 7:30 p.m. -- The scheduled start is 7:30, but with TV timeouts in the three games before this one, we all know it will be at least 8 before it starts. The past two AAAA finals have been exciting. Upper St. Clair beat Penn Hills, 18-12, two years ago, and who can forget the game a year ago when Central Catholic defeated Gateway, 35-34, in overtime. The Fumbler doesn't think this one will be as exciting. Bethel Park won't get blown out, like many people think. But The Fumbler thinks this has been Gateway's year from the start. How well Bethel Park's defensive line plays will be a big key. Winner: Gateway.

Thomas Jefferson (11-1) vs. Blackhawk (11-1), 4:30 p.m. -- Did you know Thomas Jefferson was in a championship game only twice in school history before Bill Cherpak became coach? Now, this is the Jaguars' sixth consecutive championship appearance. The Fumbler noticed last week that Blackhawk coach Joe Hamilton said his team plays "very solid defense." Blackhawk will need to play great defense to have a chance at a win against Thomas Jefferson. Winner: Thomas Jefferson.

Beaver Falls (12-0) vs. Aliquippa (10-2), 1:30 p.m. -- The Fumbler is used to going to Duquesne University's Palumbo Center with his cousin, The Dribbler, to watch these two schools play in a big WPIAL or PIAA basketball playoff game. Now, these schools take their rivalry to the gridiron championship. The Fumbler didn't think Aliquippa was good enough to make it to the football final this year -- and the Quips proved him wrong. But he has been right about Beaver Falls all year. The Quips' best chance for a win is to get a big game passing. Winner: Beaver Falls.

Clairton (12-0) vs. Monaca (11-1), 10:30 a.m. -- Is there anything better than breakfast in a Heinz Field parking lot? That's where The Fumbler will be tomorrow morning, with some of his former teammates from Gladstone High School. It's a tradition with them. The Fumbler is no hunter, but he does look at the Post-Gazette outdoors pages and noticed in Sunday's editions that archery black bear season started in some areas Wednesday. Even if Heinz Field is one of the areas, Monaca won't be able to track down the Clairton Bears. Winner: Clairton
