Symphony has raised $48 million toward $80 million goal
Wednesday, November 19, 2008

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra announced today that it has raised more than $48 million toward its goal of $80 million to increase its endowment and repair and enhance Heinz Hall.

In addition to the previously announced $29.5 million from the Richard P. Simmons family and $5.5 million from the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, the orchestra announced that its board and local foundations contributed more than $12 million.

Leading the board giving is Beverlynn and Steven Elliott's $1 million gift, but 91 percent of board members made the single largest gift each had previously made to the PSO. The Buncher Family Foundation also pledged $1 million and BNY Mellon Charitable Foundation offered a $1.5 million challenge grant to local businesses.

"We have been overwhelmed with the support from our trustees, especially in light of the challenging economic climate," said PSO president Larry Tamburri.

The orchestra now turns to the public -- individuals, foundations and corporations -- to raise the additional $31 million.
