Weather brings hazardous commute, school delays
Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Widespread lake-effect snow bands continue to cross Western Pennsylvania this morning, causing slick spots along many highways for commuters and a few school delays.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory until 10 a.m. for Beaver, Butler, Lawrence counties, and until 6 p.m. for Fayette and Westmoreland counties where another 1 to 2 inches could fall. Areas near Lake Erie and in higher elevations to the east of Pittsburgh can expect greater snowfall amounts.

Preston County in West Virginia and Garrett County in Maryland are under a winter storm warning today. Drivers using Interstate 68 to head east should be extremely cautious.

A winter weather advisory means periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility.

The National Weather Service has lifted a lake effect snow warning for Erie and surrounding areas in northwestern Pennsylvania. There will still be light snow today, but no more than 2 inches in an area that saw a foot or more of snow fall through yesterday.

In the Pittsburgh area, most major roads are clear, but there are isolated problem areas. A weather-related accident involving at least two vehicles briefly closed the Parkway West inbound after 5 a.m. today.

As snow fell and temperatures dropped late last night, police were called to several minor weather-related traffic accidents, mostly in Allegheny County, though no one was seriously hurt.

Cars struck signs, guiderails and each other in McCandless, West Deer and North Park, county dispatchers said. Salt trucks were called out.
