In recent years, since the state Department of Environmental Resources started urging parks to find creative ways to support themselves, many Pennsylvania state parks have encouraged the development of "friends of the park" groups -- independent non-profits that donate member's time and raise money to help the parks develop infrastructure and plan activities they couldn't afford otherwise.
