Nittany Lions open basketball season with a win

Talor Battle scored 21 points and Jamelle Cornley had 14 points and 12 rebounds as Penn State beat William & Mary, 65-51, last night in the season opener for both teams.

Cornley led the way for the host Nittany Lions in his first game after missing the final three games of last season with a knee injury. Penn State's Stanley Pringle added 12 points.

The Tribe got 15 points from Danny Sumner.

Penn State shot 47 percent from the field while William & Mary shot 39. The Nittany Lions grabbed an 8-0 lead to start the game and held a 35-24 edge at the intermission. The Tribe trimmed the deficit to 52-43 on a three-pointer by Chris Darnell with 5:13 to play in the game.
